Hello! I'm Dee: Designer / Maker / Teacher / Facilitator and mother of two
wonderful boys. I have been designing, making, fixing, and experimenting with all
manner of things since my childhood; it's part of who I am and I could not imagine
life without it!
I studied Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion, with the intention of becoming a wedding dress designer. However, son number one had different plans when he came along, so I decided to combine my passion for designing and making with my enjoyment of sharing knowledge and skills. I trained to be a Design Technology teacher over 15 years ago and I have been Head of Design Technology for the last 10 years at a wonderful boys' school in Bickley, Kent.
So why, you might ask, am I leaving a stable teaching job to pursue the unpredictable world of self employment?!
Well....being a creative by nature, it really concerns me that so many people describe themselves as 'not creative at all!'. I whole heartedly believe that we all have an innate creativity and that in order to thrive we need to be able to play and be creative, it's not just for kids! We all need it!! (Check out my links for scientific research into these areas).
So after a number of life changes, I was prompted challenge myself to finally follow my dream of having my own creative business.... My love of sharing knowledge and skills now has a more wide spread purpose. I enjoy teaching folk of all ages and abilities all manner of creative skills that will help them to find their 'inner creative' and access the wonderful beneficial side effects of spending time making 'stuff'!
I also have a great love of nature and a deep concern for our planet. So with a focus on recycling and repurposing materials, my aim is to help lessen the negative impact on the environment - reducing our carbon footprint and landfill overload whilst saving money and having fun at the same time! Win Win!
It has been a journey with many twists and turns already but I am loving the opportunities and the amazing people I meet and work with! Check out my gallery pages and my blog to see some of the things I've been up to in the last few years, and of course my shop to see what you can buy and the Workshop pages to see what you could learn!
